Hip surgery
For the placement of a hip prosthesis, there are different access routes to the hip joint. The ‘anterior approach’ involves reaching the hip between two muscle groups (Tensor Fascia Lata and Satorius). These muscles lie more at the front of the hip, hence the name.
Therefore, the wound is also slightly more at the front. So instead of loosening the muscles, an access to the hip is made between them. This makes it easier to place the hip prosthesis.
The preparation of the bone for the placement of the hip prosthesis, the duration of the hip surgery and the general risks such as the occurrence of infection are similar to the other methods.
For safe treatment, proper preparation is important.
Together with Drs. Lucas Kleijn you will discuss the operation. Together with the anaesthetist (anaesthesia) and the nurse (intake and aftercare), he will assess your state of health. We also take stock of your medication use and check whether any measures are necessary before and after the operation.

The anterior approach has many names.
Because it was developed in France for hip replacement, it is also called the French method.
Other names are the:
- Direct Anterior Approach (DAA)
- Anterior Supine Intermuscular (ASI)
- Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery (AMIS).

Many benefits
No muscular damage
Unlike other approaches, the anterior approach does not require the release of any muscles to reach the hip joint. The most important muscles for stable gait (without swaying) are completely left out.
Nerve-preserving
Damage to important nerves around the hip joint is also much less common with this technique. As a result, prolapse or muscle weakness is no longer a problem after surgery.
Steady
The chances of hip dislocation are minimal compared to other approaches to hip replacement. Because you lie on your back during the operation, the leg length can be better monitored, eliminating the chance of a leg length discrepancy.
Far fewer precepts
Because this method of surgery leaves the muscles around the hip unaffected, there are few rules to follow during recovery from hip surgery. You can move much more freely and with proper rehabilitation, a better recovery occurs.
Better recovery
By using the anterior approach combined with proper rehabilitation, through Hipfix, we guarantee an easier recovery during the first weeks after hip surgery.
Less pain
The anterior approach performed by Hipfix – Drs Lucas Kleijn, leads to less pain and a more stable hip.
Sleep better
In the anterior (anterior) approach, you are operated on in the supine position and the incision comes from the front. There are no restrictions after surgery in terms of sleeping.
Downside
A disadvantage of this approach is the risk of damaging a cutaneous nerve that provides sensation on the front/outside of the thigh. When treated via Hipfix, this occurs in about 2% of cases. Fortunately, this is often transient and patients, who are left with an (often small) area of altered or reduced sensation, do not describe it as bothersome. After 12 months, full recovery occurs in most cases.

The hip prosthesis
Drs Lucas Kleijn places Smith & Nephew’s uncemented Polar hip prosthesis . It has a 10a* score (the highest) according to the ODEP* rating and delivers up to long-term good results in a very large group of patients.

After your surgery
After your hip surgery, you will stay at the HCB hospital in Denia for another 2 days.
Depending on your choice*, you will then be transferred to care centre Daniya with a physiotherapy practice by Medifit in Denia. Or to care centre/rehabilitation clinic Ciudad Patricia in Benidorm.
* Patients with an underlying care indication such as e.g. Diabetes, follow rehabilitation exclusively through Ciudad Patricia. This is due to the presence of various doctors and 24/7 care.
We will be happy to serve you
